Lil’ Nas X has taken the world by storm in the last few years, and even before that. Heโs been featured everywhere, some praising him and some condemning him. But… If youโre an entrepreneur or a course creator, you’ll want to read this post!
Youโre about to learn the essential marketing tip Lil’ Nas X shares in his mega hit song Montero and why it can completely skyrocket your business growth and revenue.

But before we get started I want to take a moment to answer the question youโre probably wondering aboutโฆ
Can Lilโ Nas X really teach you anything about selling your products and services?
Short story short: YES, yes he can. I donโt know many people who didnโt hear the controversy that surrounded the launch of his โSatan shoesโ with a drop of human blood inside them.
So many people lost their shit over them. Some accusing Lilโ Nas X of being a satanist and making all sorts of ridiculous claims. Others rushing to throw money at him to get their hands on a pair.
But his popularity started even earlier when he released Old Town Road and it went viral.
Now, Iโll confess this. I never really got to listen to Old Town Road until the whole “Satan shoes” trending topic exploded on Twitter. But I did listen to the complete Montero album when it was released and absolutely loved it.

The whole marketing plan leading up to the release of his album is worth making an entire article about, but thatโs not why Iโm here today.
No. Today I want to cover just one tip. Itโs something Lil’ Nas X says in his infamous song Montero. Just one line but if you implement it into your business it has the power to get your products to sell out, everytime.
Alright, without further ado, hereโs the one marketing strategy that can increase your profits and sell out your products or services as sang by Lilโ Nas X:
“I wanna sell what youโre buying.”

I know, I know. Something so simple but yet many entrepreneurs do the opposite. Heck, Iโve done this myself too. We think we know what people want to buy, or we cling to the idea *we* want to create and we donโt bother checking if itโs what our community wants.
But, listen to Lilโ Nas X. Donโt spend months or even years creating something that you donโt know for sure people want. Skip the hassle, headaches and frustration.
Sell what people are buying.
Thatโs it. Thatโs the tweet.
If you take the time to figure out what people are buying, or rather, what YOUR audience wants to buy from YOU, youโll have a product or service that sells consistently and with little effort.
When I first decided to create a course for my community of artists, I didnโt bother to ask them what they needed help with. I assumed they needed help with the topics I covered in my course and while some people did, it didnโt resonate with the bulk of my audience.
I spent forever on that course but it didnโt sell as much as Iโd hoped because I sold what I wanted. I should have been selling what my community was ready to buy instead.

Why does this โI wanna sell what youโre buyingโ concept work?
1. it takes the guesswork out of the equation
You wonโt have to spend any time figuring out what problem to solve or choosing between different options. Youโll be able to know for sure what your audience wants from the get go.
2. Youโll feel confident in what you’re creating
Whether it’s a product, service or course, knowing theyโre going to buy it will give you immense confidence. Itโs hard to let the fear of not knowing if people will buy it kick in when youโve already confirmed they want it.
3. It will make the creation part so much easier
You’ll know the one problem your audience needs you to solve for them. You wonโt end up with a hodgepodge of solutions that donโt help anyone.
4. Youโll be able to presell a course or product and have people pay for it before you create it.
It isn’t hard to get people to put money down for something when they know itโs going to help them. Youโll be able to get the funding you need to create your offer and youโll have further confirmation that itโs a solid product idea because people are willing to buy it even before itโs ready.
5. Itโs much easier to find a product for your audience than to find an audience for your product.
Youโre building an audience on a specific niche, and theyโre all likely to have a similar need that you can meet in the form of a paid offer. But when you first create a product without validating it, it becomes harder to find the people that will want it.

How should you create your first or next product?
I suggest you decide who you want to serve and how you want to go about doing that. Will you be offering products? Services? Coaching? Consulting? Online courses?
Then you want to come up with a marketing plan to reach these people and add them to your email list.
Some of the most common ways to do this are:
- Blogs and content marketing
- Podcast shows
- Youtube videos
- Facebook, Google or other paid ads
- Pinterest and social media channels
Use these to reach your ideal audience by sharing valuable content that helps them begin to solve their problem. Offer them something to subscribe to your email list.
Once theyโre on your email list and youโve grown a small audience, you can survey them or host market research calls with them to find what they need from you. That feedback is whatโs going to help you find your profitable idea.
Youโll be selling what theyโre buying and making a nice profit while helping them solve their problems or achieve their goals.
